Looking back on what JoB has been through was unimaginable! It was a year full of hopes for him. But what is remarkable is that along the journey, we have our God with us all the time granting our every prayers, especially celebrating JoB's special day - his first year of life with us.

God heals and God answers...

June 06, 2011, JoB's FIRST BIRTHDAY was celebrated joyfully and momentously. And aside from all the inspiring greetings and prayers of love, GOD'S GIFT OF LIFE is the greatest blessing he received. PRICELESS.

This blog talks about our day to day activities in Taiwan and updates about baby Job from the day of the operation itself up to present.

APRIL 28,2011 8AM.

The day GOD has set before us. The most awaited day in Job's life. Sweet and Job went down at the OR together. Sweet hugged baby Job so tight before she enter the OR sterile area. She was anesthesized first. Thristian carried baby Job and laid him at the OR table as baby Job was given inhalational and IV anesthesia and eventually lost his consciousness.

Thristian and Nanay stayed at this area the whole time during the operation.TV Monitor kept them updated about the operation.

This means that the operation was finished.Raymelia or "Sweet" and Job Tyrese was transferred in Liver ICU after the operation.It went smoothly and just lasted for 7 hours only for Sweet(Donor) and 10 hours for baby Job(recipient) .Usually,it takes 13 to 17hours for the recipient.

Sweet and baby Job now at the Liver ICU still unconscious after the operation.After several hours, Sweet gained back her consciousness and was able to converse thru the ICU monitor.
Stronger as they thought she would be.She is an ultimate example of pure,selfless love of a mother to his child.

April 29,2011

Sweet's mom and dad arrived from the Philippines via China Airlines.All flights fullybooked till the 28th.Then had taken pictures at the Liver ICU during viewing time.

Sweet was discharged from the ICU two days after the operation.NGT,Foley catheter,IJ,O2 mask was removed. She still had peripheral IV,JP drain and of course PCA.Tears of Joy fell from Sweet's face as she went out of the ICU and saw her love ones waiting for her.

Sweet walking without assistance at this time and no more PCA but still with Thristian's company.

Baby Job can now sit upstraight with less pain or discomfort.Less contraptions and no more IJ.He cried when he saw mommy and daddy on the TV monitor.Mom and Dad miss him soo much but happy with his good condition and recovery.

Good news, Sweet'slatest blood works result improved,will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow.Contraptions all removed today.A sweet kiss for Thristian,her love and nurse 24/7.hehe

May 6,2011 DOUBLE CELEBRATION

Baby Job 11month birthday and Sweet was discharged from the hospital today.She just stayed for 1 week only.Thristian cooked his special spaghetti and fried chicken and prepared yummy foods.Job's appetite is gaining back,can drink milk a lot

Baby Job was discharged from the ICU earlier than expected.YEHEY!He just stayed 2 weeks(usually 3 weeks).Stable Vital signs,Condition is getting better and improving,has good appetite and activity said by his doctor.No more yellow eyes and skin,tummy is smaller,Praise God!All sacrifices and pain are worth it!

*Recent update:
Baby Job now stays in the Ward at 10th flr Rm 1020C.The recipient stays 2-3 weeks in the ward post Transplantation. He still has a central line and has 2 JP (Jackson Pratt)drain. The intake and output is strictly monitored especially the drains and his weight. He has frequent bloodworks and daily abdominal monitoring. Reverse Isolation precautions and strict aseptic technique is observed all the time. Job shows a lot of progress in his condition after the operation. He is more active and playful than ever, such a happy baby! His appetite is better unlike before - he usually throws up when eating solids. His current medications are:Prednisolone, Azathiopine which are Immunosuppressant, Dipyridamole tablet, Cotrimoxazole capsule, Fluconazole capsule, Sucralfate gel, Albumin IV, Meropenem IV, Ganciclovir IV, and CMV antibody and Cyclosporine which is also an Immunosuppresant and should be taken at specific time without delay. Doctors informed us that Job will take anti-rejection drugs for a lifetime but the dosages will be decreased in time.

*We as parents (Thristian and Raymelia) are witnesses on how God works His ways in JoB's life. JOB IS GOD'S LIVING TESTIMONY OF HIS AMAZING GRACE! He remains so faithful and never leaves us. We are rest assured that as he starts his young life everything will be according to God's perfect plan.

Still we are praying for his continuous recovery here in Taiwan. Again, to people who made this possible, Thank You for being a part of this success!

Walk by Faith

These pictures were taken during our departure in the Philippines and arrival in Taiwan.Then our precious bonding time with baby Job in about a week before the surgery.

This is the day we're waiting for,the day that we would finally fly to Taiwan for Job's operation. April 20,2011 at 10:30 am, we boarded China Airlines and arrived in Kaohsiung at 12:3opm. Baby Job was just asleep the whole trip. We went directly to our rented apartment located within the vicinity of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Then later that afternoon, Job and Sweet were admitted already for final living donor work-up. Our room was located at 10th flr (Liver Transplant Ward), Room F13 at the Children's building. All the screening tests and diagnostics test have to be repeated using the hospital's facilities to ensure safety and reliability. It took about one week to finish all the test for the recipient and the donor liver compatibility. Blood extraction, X-rays,ultrasound, 2 dECHO, CT Scan, MRI, Vaccination, psychology test etc etc., were done to us. The hospital facilities were much more advanced and high end.

On April 25,2011, Monday. The Transplant team had their final study and conference of our case and confirmed the schedule of operation on Thursday. Baby Job were given pre-operative medications before the surgery and both of us had fasting the night of the surgery. On the 28th of April, Thursday 8:00 am, will be the moment that God has set before us.

Run for JoB Tyrese

Another God sent soul, Ms. Mara Guevara, an architect and a triathlete who plans to hold a benefit run for our baby JoB.

"For those of you who don't know me, my name is Mara Guevara. I'm an architect by day and wannabe triathlete at night. I'll be celebrating my 26th birthday this 08 May 2011. This year, I've decided to do a benefit run for JoB Tyrese." (Mara Guevara)

Let us run for JoB Tyrese :

On May 15 2011, I commit to running as many kilometers as I can for 3 hours in an effort to raise funds for Baby Job's liver transplant. I will be accepting pledges in two ways:

1. You can pledge a certain amount for each kilometers that I complete. Minimum pledge is a measly Php 10 per kilometer. So if I finish twenty five (25) kilometers in 3 hours, you would have pledged Php 250 for JoB's cause.

2. You can pledge a fixed amount regardless of how many kilometers I finish. Minimum fixed pledge is Php 250.

*The amounts stated above are the minimum. If you wish to pledge a higher amount, then that is most welcome.

As this is a benefit run, I am minimizing expenses by providing for my own hydration needs. There will be no aid stations, kilometer markers, free singlet, medal, or other luxuries provided in other runs. My only aid station will be my car. I will provide for my own electrolyte drinks, salt tabs and energy gels. All you have to do is pledge for JoB.

For those of you that run, feel free to accompany me so I dont get bored. HeHeHe. You can run with me for one kilometer, ten kilometers, or even for the entire three hours. You can even bike alongside me, if you want to. It's up to you. What's important is that I raise funds for Baby JoB.

The Best Christmas Gift

It was our first Christmas together with Job Tyrese—and it was a special occasion that gave a whole new meaning to receiving blessings from up above.

I was fortunate enough to meet this person, popularly known as “Aksyon Lady”-Maam Kaye Dacer of DZMM TeleRadyo (whose daughter became my patient in my work as a nurse)and I believe that It was God’s plan that I would be able to meet her- a Blessing in Disguise, so to speak. She learned about my baby, Job Tyrese’s condition and invited me to guest on her show.

I was so hopeful of the opportunity given to me and did not want to miss the chance. Several days before Christmas (on December 20), my husband and I went on the air in her show - “Aksyon Ngayon Global Patrol” aired Mon-Fri 1:30-2:30pm, to ask for help for our child’s impending operation. It gave us an opportunity to help raise funds to the show’s listeners and viewers.

“This is for Job,” we told ourselves several times to quell the nervousness we were feeling then.

The response we received after our spot was overwhelming and unbelievable, to say the least.

Right after the show, we immediately received several text messages and phone calls offering their help. It was this moment we realized there are still kind-hearted people out there who are generous enough to share what they have even to total strangers like us.

In fact, the first one who gave a donation for Job called and told me that he was on the street right there and then, driving his car. Upon hearing my story, he wanted to deposit money right away.

This man wanted to remain anonymous and had instead asked for our bank account. He deposited P30,000 immediately. We can’t thank you enough, sir. You are an angel!

After that, my husband received a text message from a woman who said she wanted to give us her piggy bank. When my husband met with the woman, Thristian was surprised that the piggy was full. He learned that the coins inside was money that the woman saved for a whole year! Ibinagay nya kay Job yung pinagiponan nya sa isang taon.It was really touching!

We named that piggy bank “Blessing” and had taken a picture of it so Job can see it when the time comes. God bless you, ma’am, for your kind heart!

We even received calls from our OFWs in Saudi extending their help to us while others were willing to meet us in person just to give the donations in cash. Nakakatuwang isipin na sa mga panahon na ito, marami pa rin palang may mabubuting kalooban at willing to reach out to others.

I CAN REALLY FEEL CHRISTMAS because of these people.

Baby Job Tyrese was able to raise P151,000 since our spot on that show. The donations came in different denominations—some P500, others P2,000, and many were P5,000. Any amount given was much appreciated.

While it is a great start, there is still a lot to be done. Baby Job needs P3,000,000 to P4,000,000 for his operations to cure him of his disease. I do believe that this baby steps when put together will help us reach our journey.

JoB Tyrese has a monthly checkup with his Pediatric Hepatologist (Dr. Germana Gregorio). He was maintained in a medication regimen for 3 months after the surgery, consisting of Phenobarbital and Ursofalk as coloretic or to enhance bile excretion out of the liver. He was also in Multivitamins, Vitamin K, Vitamin E and an antibiotic Co-trimozaxole. He also has monthly blood test (Total Bilirubin and direct Bilirubin) - to check the improvement in JoB's blood. But still, blood levels (Bilirubin) were consistently high.

To supplement his nutrition, currently, he is taking Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Zinc, Multivitamins and VCO(virgin coconut oil) with his regular milk to gain weight which is not significant for the past few months. There is a required weight necessary before undergoing liver transplantation. He is still on regular blood test as advised by his doctor.

* JoB's weight at 5 months was 6.5kgs. Now, at 6 months, he is 6.6kgs, a gain weight of only 0.1kg.

Just like any other first time parents, we wish nothing but to have a healthy, normal baby who can enjoy life to the fullest.

For 9 months, we did our very best to take care and protect our precious “little one inside” and made sure he had a safe delivery. Indeed, our first child was born safe and healthy-looking and we were so happy for the blessing we received.

Baby Job Tyrese is a happy baby. He smiles and laughs a lot, loves to play with everyone (even people he just saw for the first time), and responds enthusiastically with different sounds and voices around him (we fondly call him “boy- tunog” because of this). He is such a wonderful baby!!

Everything seemed perfect—we are a young family with full of hopes and dreams. But as weeks passed by, our Baby Job remained “yellowish” in color or “jaundice.” One look at him and you notice his yellowish eyes. His stool, too, have become more pale-colored; and his tummy was noticeably bigger than any other normal baby.

Blood tests and other diagnostic examinations were conducted to determine what was wrong with him. The results showed he has BILIARY ATRESIA, a congenital, rare and serious liver disease of newborn infants.

Our world turned upside down and we were devastated! At first, we questioned our faith, asking Him why of all the babies in the world, “Bakit sa anak pa namin?”

We are good people and we did not deserve this, we thought. But soon we realized, “Sino ba kami para tanungin sya?” We don’t have the right to question God, for He is the one who gave us Job, the ONE who gave life to Job, and the ONE who gave this blessing to us. HE is Job’s Creator “kaya my karapatan siya sa kanya…”

We, as parents, are just caretakers of Job and our role is to let him feel loved. We remained faithful to God. We believed that everything happens for a reason and He is our strength now in this most difficult time of our lives.

At 2 months, baby Job Tyrese underwent surgery (kasai/hepato-eneterostomy) to provide temporary outlet of bile from his body to prevent further liver damage. Even if it broke our hearts seeing our son in the operating room and after the surgery with tubings/contraptions on his body, we took the chance for him to become better.

We were very hopeful for the success of the operation. But after 3 months under observation, our baby was still jaundice, the surgery didn’t work for him. Another downfall for us! But with God’s help and the support of our families and friends, we were able to accept easily our fate and Job’s fate as well.

After all that happened, Liver Transplantation is the ONLY option for Job’s survival. A more stressful situation for us not only emotionally, physically, mentally, but also financially. The procedure can only be done abroad with and it would cost us an astounding amount of P4-7 Million which our family doesn’t have right at this moment.

We may not be that poor like others, we still eat 3 times a day. Pero ang pinagdadaanan naming ngayon ay parang katulad din sa pamilyang gumagawa ng paraan magkaroon lang ng hapunan.

We are not rich. We are a newly-wed couple, a young family who is just starting from a humble beginning. But we know that God is good, we strongly believe that He will make a way for our son for a second chance of life.

Maraming paraan, ika nga, at isa na ito sa paraan na alam namin... That’s why we appeal to your charity and compassion. Families, relatives, friends, and everyone out there who has a kind heart, PLEASE help us raise the needed amount for our son’s liver transplantation.

Please let baby Job experience what life is—as God would want him! Please help us also spread our fund-raising campaign to other people. Living donor Liver Transplantation in Taiwan

Me and my wife, Sweet, inquired regarding liver transplantation in one of the hospital in Taiwan performing the procedure. Here's a brief summary to give you a background regarding pediatric liver transplantation program mailed to us by the hospital's International Patient Coordinator - Ms. Linda Lin.

- Total cost that the hospital requires before the patient arrives in Taiwan: NT$ 1.5 million (NT$ 1 = Phil Peso 1.5); that's roughly about Phil. Peso 2 million (depending on current exchange rate). This amount includes both recipient and donor operations. This amount covers operations, hospitalization (3-in-a-room + ICU), medications, and diagnostic tests. This amount is for uncomplicated cases. If this cost is not consumed, all unused money will be refunded. This amount EXCLUDES all travel and living expenses while your family is in Taiwan.

- The family will stay in Taiwan for around 3 months. There may be a hostel (semi-furnished with kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom, telephone, cable TV, refrigerator, hot and cold water) available within the hospital compound. Rent is around NT$ 770/day or NT$20,000/month. Payment for the hostel is not included in the NT$ 1.5 million.

- Recipient will stay in ICU after the transplant for 2-3 weeks, 2-3 weeks in the ward, then 1 month in the house.

- Donor and Recipient must have same blood type or ABO compatible. Donor must be negative for HBV or HCV. Donor must be within 5th degree of consanguinity with the recipient or the recipient's spouse. Donor must be at least above 20 years of age.

birth date, relationship with recipient

- Hepatitis profile: HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc, anti-HCV

- Blood Chemistry: CBC, Albumin, AST, ALT, Total and Direct Bilirubin,
Creatinine, INR/Protime, AFP

- Liver Ultrasound

The patient who underwent liver transplantation will need to take immunosuppressants (medicine of anti-rejection) for lifetime to prevent rejection of their liver. Regular checkup is requested for liver transplant patient. In Taiwan, the estimated cost of monthly immunosuppressants and checkup is around NT. 15,000. Please also give this matter your consideration.
